Bead diameter is the single strongest design decision in a beaded bracelet: it changes how the piece looks on the wrist, who buys it, what it costs to make, and how it photographs. This guide covers the five sizes you will meet in the market — 4mm through 12mm — and what each one is for. At JSY Crystal, every standard bead size is available across our core stones in the collection — and custom sizes beyond the standard range can be produced to order.
The sizes at a glance
| Bead size | On the wrist | Who buys it | Range notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4mm | Fine and delicate; made for stacking two or three together | Fashion jewelry buyers, layering sets, younger gift buyers | Lowest material cost per piece; labor per bracelet is not lower — tiny beads still get sorted and strung one by one |
| 6mm | Subtle, light, office-friendly | Everyday wearers, gift sets, buyers who want a gentle price point | Stocked across most of our stones; a safe second size next to 8mm |
| 8mm | The classic bracelet look — clearly gemstone, not costume | The broadest audience; the default for first orders | Our best-selling diameter; available in all eight core stones |
| 10mm | Noticeable weight and presence; reads premium in photos | Statement buyers, men's ranges, higher price tiers | Material cost rises faster than diameter — large clean beads are scarcer |
| 12mm | Bold, sculptural, unmistakably a statement piece | Men's collections, collectors, hero-product photography | Top of the classic range; larger custom sizes are available on request |
Bead count follows wrist size, not diameter alone
For a standard adult wrist, an 8mm bracelet typically carries around 22 beads, a 6mm around 28, and a 12mm around 18 — the count simply fills the same wrist with bigger or smaller beads. When you order, specify both the bead diameter and the finished wrist size (or bead count), especially for gift programs where recipients vary. Mixed sizes within one group order are normal; our travel and corporate gift orders mix 6mm, 8mm and 10mm in a single shipment.
What size does to price
Buyers often expect price to scale with diameter. It scales faster. A 12mm bead holds roughly three times the material of an 8mm bead, and clean, inclusion-free rough in large sizes is harder to source — which is why large, clean beads of inclusion-rich stones like phantom quartz and rutilated quartz command a premium at 10mm and above. Faceting, when offered, adds labor at every size.
Choosing sizes for a first range
- Retail and boutique: open with 8mm as the anchor, add 6mm for a lower entry price and gift sets.
- Men's or unisex lines: 10mm and 12mm carry the range; 8mm works as the lighter option.
- Gift programs: 8mm suits the widest range of wrists; offer 6mm and 10mm as alternates rather than guessing one size for everyone.
- Stacking sets: pair 4–6mm pieces in two or three stones; small sizes earn their place in sets, not singles.
Every product page in the shop lists the sizes offered for that stone — start with amethyst, rose quartz and citrine if you want the three most-gifted stones in the classic 8mm.
